WELCOME TO THE PROCESS BLOG!

Greetings ART 2-4 and AP Studio Art,

The Purpose of this Blog is to make your Artistic Process and your Thinking Visible.

Here you will be posting written reflections, sketches, finished works of art, photos, videos and more.

You’ll be reflecting on your own work, giving feedback to your peers and receiving feedback from me.

Current Project:

“What Would An Artist Do?”

Students are working together in pairs using a TIME magazine cover as a prompt for beginning an artistic collaboration, and are capturing their process on 10′ long sheets of paper.

Midway into the project, Students chose one of Five ARTISTIC ORIENTATIONS, or paths, to guide them to the completion of the project which will consist of intermediate sketches.

5  Artistic Orientations:

1) Straight Observation

2) Experimentation

3) Exploring Other Perspectives

4)Persuading the Viewer

5) Constructing a Narrative

IN ADDITION-we discussed how artists engage in many types of PROACTIVE THINKING. SUCH AS:

  • EXPLORING
  • ENVISIONING
  • CONNECTING WITH
  • COMMENTING ON
  • CRITICIZING
  • ENGAGED OBSERVING (SEEING/UNDERSTANDING)
  • COMPARING
  • CONTRASTING
  • CREATING HYBRIDS
  • DISTORTING
  • JUXTAPOSING
  • EXPRESSING

AMY B Studio Habits Reflection

amy-sketch

i like to streach and explore in my sketches. you can see in the middle that i had made my original sketch on this page but wanted to also try my colors and see if it was exactly what i wanted. I also am developing craft as i try new ways of doing things, like blending colors and going from thick to thin lines and going from dark to light on a large scale. if you look at this finished work from this sketch then you would see how they incorperate into eachother. like why i sketched homethingd and what they ended up being on my finished work.

reflecting on current project

“What has been the most difficult part of this project? How did you work through any problems you may have had?”

the most difficult part for me was really figuring out how i wanting to lay everything down on my paper and what kind of media i wanted to use. once i figure thous out i only hit a few more trouble some spots, like i couldn’t dicide on colors, didnt know how to fill in a lot of the negivite space i had in my work. i figured it out with a little help by talkingit out with the people around me.
I alway try to find things that i dont like and see how i can make things better but i realized i sometimes end up messing the whole thing up, this time if i thought something looked a little off i left it and moved on, waited for it to fall into place with the rest of my work and if i still thought it was off then i would touch it up.

what would an artist do #1

1. What have you learned this year about your own PROCESS -or- the kinds of thinking you do when you are planning, making and looking at works of art?
i like to try and envision the perspective of other artist and look at my own work and try and see what others would envision my work as. i like to observe other, more advanced artist to see if i could pick things up. I’ve really been using engage and persist because i realize i always reach a point were i wont like my work for a little while, but if i fallow threw that i end up liking it in the end again.

2. Write a few paragraphs about the role your process journals (reflections/sketches) and the blog have played in the way you think about your process-AKA the way you do your work in this class.
my process journal has help me a lot cause once i start sketching things out and drawing diff things it really helps me envision how my work will possibly look. i didn”t know how to start my last project but i just stopped thinking about it and drawing little pictures here and there and really liked what i saw so i put it all together for my mapping questions.
I haven’t really got into the blogging untill now, but i don’t really mind it all that much, i feel it kinda helps get a point across on a larger scale. i like being able to see everyones pont of few all organized in one place.

3. What happens when you make an effort to be aware of your artistic process?
if you can step back and see how your doing things maybe you can find a more efficent way of doing what you previously were. you can also possibly learn more about the way your own mind works by seeing how you figure things out, or see how you can look at things differently.

What Would an Artist Do? #2 Eric, Michelle, Amy

1. Our topic for this project was ‘The Great Depression’ in America. For our artistic orientation, we chose Exploring Other Perspectives, because we wanted to try and exhibit what it was like for all the people that lived through it, at that time.

2. Our artwork’s message was basically, that everybody was somehow affected by ‘The Great Depression’. Many people suffered during that time period and we wanted to try and really communicate that message.

3. For our visual elements, we picked out a variety of pictures from that specific time period and hand-drew ‘Scream’ masks on a separate sheet of paper. We then cut them out and pasted then onto every one of the faces on the photographs. The ‘Scream’ masks were sort of supposed to be emblematic to the horrors of the depression. We were also trying to tie together our thought process by relating Horror movies (which we came up with in our thought process) with the Depression.

4. We used a lot of juxtaposition for this project, because we had to compare and contrast horror movies to ‘The Great Depression’. At first, it was slightly difficult to find a relation that made sense between the two. But once we discovered it, it was not so difficult.

what would an artist do #2 cesar, arvin, julianno

1. We chose experimentation in our final sketch. We also used envisioning. We envisioned what the future would be like on the borders. We used experimentation because we didn’t know whether or not the viewers would understand the concept we were trying to portray so we tried several different ways before choosing our final idea.
2. Our work’s meaning has to do with the fact that everyone is getting more technologically advanced. especially for homeland security.  our government is putting more efforts into our borders so we wanted to show how a high tech approach to border security would look.
3.we used visual metaphors, or symbols. we used robots to represent border patrol agents.
4. we explored because we used metaphors that we  usually dont use. we also used observe because the robot  drawings were all based on several references that we found.

What would an artist do #2 Mariecar, Julissa

1. the orientation Julissa and i were using was observation., and constructing narrative.  We chose this orientation because we envisioned photographs to observe the physical aspects to relationships.  the photographs speak for themselves

2. Our piece portrays the physical aspects of attraction and how attraction happens or occurs in relationships.

3. Some of the visual elements that we used to communicate our piece’s meanings were the use of our focal points.  our piece is straight on to the point.

4. Proactive thinking:
exploring: we are exploring because we are trying to find or see our uses of focal points.

What Julissa and I were planning in our heads were just photographs of random people’s lips.  most physical attractions lead up to the lips. whether relationships are platonic, motherly, unconditional, or a mixture of all three or more, physical gestures are a significant part of “chemistry.”
Just to experiment, i borrowed a camera, and started to actually take pictures of people’s lips.  at first, i was sort of nervous to ask people.  cause i wanted to capture people i didn’t know.  i felt that by not knowing who they were, it would look more interesting at the end.  at the end of the day, i took over twenty something pictures of people.  some people i  did know, more i didn’t.  i scanned through all of the photographs and i started to remember people’s faces, or people’s expressions, gestures, what they were saying, etc. i loved how each person i captured, they all said something a little different.  it was a great experience to do, just to observe and wait for the results at the end. i didn’t expect anything too significant would happen after i took those photos, but i saw that it was a fun thing to do.  it definitely was different.

What Would An Artist Do? #2 Boya and Katrina

1. we choose experimentation because it fits us better in our style of thinking. And We liked the way our ideas worked out on this stage. We felt the most creative with this way of thinking.

2. Our artwork means that guns are bad and that the U.S. needs to enforce their gun control policy. We are trying to communicate to the audience that not only are we making the guns, but we are selling them to other places too. And that too many Americans have guns in their houses. Resulting in more crimes and violence in the U.S. of A. So therefore, we are killing ourselves and the others who we provide weapons to.

3. Our visual elements that we used to communicate the meaning of gun control is fire because fire burns and destroys everything, and usually has a negative meaning.

4. Proactive thinking used: envision-we envisioned that the guns were wood, and it is placed underneath the U.S. so it seems like a campfire. And the fire is burning the U.S.

expressing- We are expressing our opinions about guns.

distortion- We distorted the U.S. map by making it look like there are two of them. It creates a shadow almost. I like to think of it as the U.S. melting away from the intensive fire.

What Would An Artist Do? #2 Moe & Ricardo

1. We chose the orientation, exploring other people’s perspective. We chose the fight between Israelis & Palestinians. We chose it because it is something that is happening now. We also chose it because these countries have been fighting for centuries.

2. The meaning of our art work shows that the Jews are doing what the Nazi’s did. It is all about why the Jew’s are attacking and it is just showing that they have no reason why they are fighting. It also shows both perspectives and opinions of both sides.

3. We used a lot of other peoples’ perspectives and what the Muslims think of Jews and what the Jews think of Muslims. We couldn’t find any Jewish people, so what we did was we went to websites to see what people say about the conflict between Muslims and Palestinians.

4. So far as proactive thinking we used a lot of exploring, envisioning, and a lot of observing. We explored peoples thoughts about the conflict and we explored the internet on people who debate about the conflict. So far as in envisioning we thought about drawings like putting a yam aka on top of Hitlers head showing a message and we also use objects like spaceships that have Nazi’s signs and the Jewish symbol showing a message that the Jews are repeating what the Nazi’s are doing. We observed a lot of people’s opinions and we observed what people put on the internet about Muslims and Jews and how they have been rivalries for the longest time.

what would an artist do #2 -Daniel -Joseph -Kevin

1.We chose the experimentation orientation because our main idea, the question of “Do we think of war as a game?” is very arbitrary and open to interpretation, which enabled us to try different ways, concepts, and techniques of portraying that idea.

2.The meaning of this sketch tries to shows one of the possibilities of what we subconsciously think of when we play games. when looking at the final sketch that we came up with, the blood on the hands and controller shows the gravity of actually killing a man, and clarifies the seriousness in killing, whether real or not.

3.We used symbolic use of color & visual, metaphors, primarily to portray the meaning of the piece, since it is primarily symbolic. As mentioned before, the blood on the hands and controller in the sketch symbolize the actual seriousness of the concept of killing whether in a game or in real life. The blood is intended to symbolize this as a visual metaphor.

4.We explored the idea by thinking about possible thoughts overlooked by gamers about the concept of killing. We also tried to connect the separate ideas of the piece in such a way that it goes together and conveys a clear message. However, we primarily used juxtaposition to compare a gamer playing a war game to an actual killer with blood on their hands.

What Would an Artist Do? #2- ashley, pooja, sandy

1. We chose a persuasive video orientation because our topic was something to make other people aware of. We could persuade people to really think about what was going on around them and what they had in their power to try and fix. With videos you can fit more information into the piece and make people even more educated on your topic. The various clips allow you to have a wider aspect of the topic, and with more room you can move around with creativity and sway a little from just one frozen topic.

2. Our work means that global warming is indeed an issue in the world and we humans need to use every opportunity to fight it so we can save the environment, and make the world a better place to be in.

3. The visual artwork we used to communicate the meaning of the piece were the melting glaciers, hair spray cans, fallen trees, and symbolic suns for heating. All of the images simply represented small pieces of the much bigger problem.

4. The proactive thinking we used was mostly observing and envisioning. We observed and looked at the original magazine cover of the knights saving the trees, which triggered many images in the mind for envisioning what to put down on the paper. We also stretched and explored new ways to help the environment and thought of more ways the earth was being damaged.

  1. I learned alot from this project now i can look at one thing and see it from different views. I learned how to observe better when im thinking. When i do my journal i can write my thoughts and i deas that i have for the project. I can express my self more when i write on my journal so my art is better.
  2. In my art now i plan ahead and then write it so that i can not forget any of it. Now i can envisison better from what ive learned from the project. Now i can see that different people have different views on art. I learned this year that you can express your self through art and writting what you feel. When I  make an effort to be aware of my artistic process I think that my final piece is always better.my process journal gave me a place to write my thought s and i cant loose them lik in a paper. I can realy see my art how its gonna be before i draw it. Now i can look at a pic and write more stuff about it.

What would an artist doo doo doo doo?!

1. I have learned to observe more during my “thinking” moment. it helped me to understand art alot more better by observing the very small details about the project. by oberving well i can really plan ahead on my projects and i can now think outside the box. also i could really express myself even more.

2. The blog thing that wer’e doing right now really is annoying but it helped me finish my things. This ables me to just type things instead of writing it on a new pice of paper. also by doing my journal i can save up my ideas instead of just putting it on a random piece of paper and lose it each day.  my process journal gave me a place to sketch and explore ideas. it sorta make me organize in some way.

3. I believe that am able to to really use my potential and duh i am able to think really well rather than just putting some random thoughts on my projects.

What Would an Artist Do? #1 Katrina Rabang

1. this year I learned a lot about my own process of thinking when planning, making, and looking at art works. I mainly used engage and persist on most of the projects for example on the tag project i was having such a hard time trying to make letters look 3-D and flow at the same time so i overcame my problem by deciding words werent working for me but shapes were more my style of tagging. I also noticed that in my artworks i try and make it look like how i feel and how to express or convey what i feel about the project or that week. I definitely stretch and explore with my ideas like more on go with the flow type of the things and learn from my mistakes or just make it look better.
2. the reflections/sketches just help me on envisioning my thinking process on how my artwork will look like or where the pieces go onto the paper, what fits and look good; it helps me express what i want people to notice about my work. the way i do my work in class is mainly a trial and error type of thing’ i take one part of a piece that i didnt like and combine it into another piece that would be missing something.
3. When i am aware of my artistic process its like im in my on world of thought, very focused and concentrated that nothing else matters and its like my mind shuts off of other thoughts that would be bugging me and it just focuses on art.

What Would an Artist do? #1 Boya Yu

1. What I have learned this year about my own process the most is engaging and persisting and expressing. I learned that my emotions can really be expressed on paper. I also learned that sketching really helps. I realized that the time I put into sketching is not a waste. That if I stick to sketching, then my final piece will turn out better. I’m thinking more about composition this year too. I can really picture what it’ll look like before I draw it. I’m also learning about reflecting. After I draw it, I look back on it and see if the emotions I’m trying to portray is obvious or not.
2. I think that my reflections in my sketchbook are a very important thing for  my projects. It lets me see on paper what my feelings and thoughts are. And I choose which emotion I want to put on my projects. I also like to work with no distractions. So I tend to listen to music while I work. So I won’t forget my envision of what my projects are supposed to look like.
3. When I make an effort to be aware of my artistic process. I think my symbols and metaphors are more clear to my audience.

what would an artist do? #1-Alex Kwon

The importance of planning a piece of art is underestimated, and I learned that if you stretch and explore during this step of the process, the final piece would not only look so much more thought-out, but it would also be easier to complete. Not much has changed with the making of artwork besides my mentality. Being now in a more demanding AP art class, I engage and persist more when I run into obstacles, which results in more complete and creative pieces. As for looking at works of art, it is important to keep an objective and critical eye, especially when it comes to looking at your own pieces. That way, you see all the flaws and avoid making the same mistakes the next time around.

Transfering my process from my mind to a blog or a journal has solidified it for me and brought it to my attention. While at first I would simply go through the motions of an artistic process, I now understand the impact it has on the timliness and overall appearance of the final piece. Therefore, the journal entries and blog posts have done more than help me simply to jot down my emotions or choose a studio habit I experienced. They allow me to appreciate the steps required to create a beautiful piece.

As I have mentioned before, simply by writing on blogs or in the art journal, I have become aware of my artistic process.  By becoming aware of my personal process, I learn the flaws in the steps I take and how they can lead to a less satisfying piece. For example, I know that when it comes to making sketches, I can get lazy and unmotivated. However, I know that more often than not, this leads to an unsuccessful piece. So I fixed my process my including a more serious sketches and I have found it to be a significant adjustment.  Therefore, if someone becomes aware of their process, they can find their most productive means to produce a piece and discover hidden abilities to make a masterpiece.

What Would an Artist Do? #1-Ashley

1. I’ve learned that in my process of art I do a lot of envisioning to get an idea into my head in the first place. Once I’ve got that down it helps a lot with actually getting it out onto paper and expressing. I also use a lot of observing as I am planning. I find I don’t like to stretch and explore because I absolutely hate being out of my comfort zone. It’s someting i need to work on. And I reflect when looking at other people’s works of art.

2. Our process journals and blog have really forced me to think about my process of working and reflect on my technique and why I ended up doing what I did. The journal also forced me to drag the ideas floating around my head down onto paper where it is permanent and visible so I could get a clearer grasp.

3. When I  make an effort to be aware of my artistic process I think the end work is better and more developed due to it being more carefully thought out. Sometimes spontaneous and just drawing what you feel at the moment is good but it doesnt usually work so well for me. It helps to be told what to do and forced to think.

what would an artist do ?#1-kevin

1. i got better in observing. when i was drawing something i really never looked into it like the details. so that i can draw better i got better in envisioning cause, now if i envision i can keep the picture on the my mind. so i can draw it better i understand the art world better and i got better in expressing, i use colors to express my self, feeling.

2.the blog helps alot because people comment on your work and u get to make it better. you know where you messedup. the process journal are kinda of good but like i feel i dont have to write what i think. when people common on it or on your work they have different observations and its good.they have different reactions like feeling from different people.

3. i do my work better but sometime i get distracted.

What Would an Artist Do? #1-Daniel Diamond

1)This year as an art 2 student I have learned from using my own process journal. My favorite technique to use in my sketchbook is engage and persist, because once i start a piece i can develop the piece into a work of art. This is the main way that i use the process journal.

2)The way that the blog and sketchbook have played an important role in the creation of my art is through the developmental process. the sketch book and blog website offer me these various forms of development because i am able to reflect on my work by reviewing or seeing what i wrote during the steps of creating my work. From my experience an art project grows in scale with the train of thought of my mind. If i have a big train of thought then i have a larger criteria of material to use to develop my piece.

3) When i make an effort to be aware of my artistic process during the middle of my work by writing it i can get side tracked very easily- and then i wind up talking to joseph. the only way that i can be aware of my process but not be side tracked is to NOT write it during the middle of my work.

What Would an Artist Do? #1-Joe Oliveras

1) It seems to me that I have been developing craft the most so far this year. For example, before this year I was not much of a painter, but recently I have been practicing at it and now come to prefer it. More importantly, whenever I do any project, I have used my scketches not only to add ideas, but to use each sketch as an improvement of the previous one and to add ideas that eventually become my final piece.

2) Doing sketches and reflections in the process journal helps me to come up with new ideas for pieces I am currently doing, as well as for future ideas for future pieces. For this the sketches are the most reliable. I try to add on and reinvent the ideas that I come up with while finding new ideas as well.
The reflections allow me not only to do what I mentioned before but also to find ways to improve on my ideas. When I feel that something in a piece needs improvement, then my reflections will clarify them. Because of this, I can remember to do whatever it is I need to improve.

3) In an effort to be aware of my artistic process, usually I find that it holds me back from producing a piece. I think that any project turns out best when alot of the thoughts that come to it are impulsive and not premeditated. However, when reflecting on the piece, it helps to be aware of your process. That is the time when being aware of what you did to make the piece is best used.

Lee Lawhorn: Tag Sketch, Stretch and Explore

lee21

i really used stretch and explore on this project, i was not used to the styles of tagging that Mr. Elkin showed  us- i explored my capability’s and finished my project.

Reflection; tag project

creating the tag project the second time was a bit easier than my first time.  i learned a lot from the first time making it, to now.  last year’s was in my opinion, too much going on in one piece.  and to me, it would confuse the eye and strain it cause there was just too much colour and terrible shading.

now, the current piece that i created was a bit easier.  having concrete reference helped me a lot through out the project.  my tag was really simple. more of a quick scribble than really a “tag.”  but what i concentrated more was the backround.  three different naked bodies in a line.  to me, that was my “tag.”

tag project

The project was kinda hard cause, it was hard to draw the small sketch to a bigger piece.

n the first project i was doing didnt come out as i wanted so i started a new one

last year i did the tag project and it was kinda hard than the first time its was easier.

i used different colors for different emotions.

tag reflection

the hardest part of the tag for me was the color choice, i was stuck trying to find colors that worked together. i used colors such as blue, green, and turquoise. then to contrast i, used black and gray for most of the rest of the piece. it took me a little bit to think of the right colors, then i got them it turned out great cuz the flow of the colors made it amazing.

Reflecting On the Tag Project

The tag project was something that I have done before, so I had an idea of how to start it. For me nothing was excepitonally difficult when doing the project. The most difficult thing to do was to come up with the idea for my piece and to continue adding things to highlight the whole theme of the piece. Staying persisting on the theme of the tag was also something that was a bit hard to do because when other things come to mind, I tend to have doubts on the previous idea.

For this piece, I played around with the direction of where the eye of the viewer was going. i did this by making the word curve downwards like the letters were hanging and linked to each other. Color was also something that I tried to work on. I tried to use colors that matched each other and set them to a contrasting background in order to make the foreground stand out.

Tag project engage and persist

The way i engaged and persisted with my project was by fighting through all of the obstacles that stood in my way and completion of the project.

As i was developing the project i had 6 steps that i took before i was done with completion, and i also wrote 6 things in my sketch book about the project this helped me to engage and persists because i was able to find any place in my work that needed change and then i went and fixed them.

The six things that i wrote in my sketch book were simple but they were required for completion of a good project.
1.Sketching
2.Sharpie letters
3.beautiful color
4.background
5.fill in all white areas
6.Require for visual metaphor
After i had identified each of these every day i then fixed and mistakes with my piece and made it into the best thing that it could be. Fixing errors with the piece is the main part of engage and persist.

How I engaged and persisted on my tag

This project went fairly well but there were little challenges with decisions I had to make along the way. The main decisions were what colors/patterns would look good and make my tag successful? I remember just jumping into the project because it was the only thing I could really do because I was unfamiliar with this praticular project. After I designed and completed the first letter, the letter “M”, I really needed to take into concideration what would actually go well with what was already done. After the first couple of letters I really got the hang of it and from then on it was just quick decisions I subconciously made in my head.

tag project reflection

This project was different from the ones before because we all have done it before in prior art classes. Therefore, we could learn from our mistakes and even experiment for a more difficult piece. I was one of the students who decided to try something more challenging than the previous tag project.

For this piece, I considered the direction the eye of the viewer would follow and I envisioned an ambitious theme of metallics. The latter proved to more of a challenge in which I truly had to engage and persist. Although the new indian ink is more workable, it was still difficult to capture the look of metal. I had to apply multiple layers so that to achieve that look.

Casey Hunt: Stretch/explore/engage/persist

casey24

the studio habit i used was defifnatly stretch and explore. usually i like to draw places or something so for me to draw a person, especially myself was super difficult to get into. it didnt turn out how i thought it would. for one i thought it would be more realistic looking when i started. i had to erase alot and i struggled to not just quit. another studio habit i used was engage and persist. even though it wasnt really what i wanted to do, i kept working at it untill it was finished. in all i dont really like how my piece turned out just because its not me, and its not how i like to express myself. but im glad to have at least tried a different way of art.

My Studio Habit Post

This is the intermediate sketch of my Tag Drawing. One of the studio habits that I used in this sketch was Stretch and Explore. I’ve never done a tag project before. I also used Envision because before drawing the rough sketch, I tried to imagine what the final piece would look like.

Reflect back on Tag project

The tag project was fun. I did Japanese character by using tablet and photoshop. The whole thing goes pretty well, but one thing i was thinking for so long is that, how do i make the character pop out from background.

how i solving this problem is that i made the character really large, and in dark color, black. and it works.

Danny’s sketch

I was trying to made the “Drift” word drifting and still need to fix the road and color it. but, im not really sure how to color it yet~

Cameron Crosby-”stretch and explore”

Cameron Crosby

so with this piece i did alot. mainly i drew it. but with this current assingment i am required to talk about a “studio habit” that i expirinenced during the duration of my drawing. i guess i would have to pick………the old stand-by… stretch and explore. for some reason i thought about a dude with his hands going into his face and under his skin and for some other reason i thought it would be a good idea to draw it………………………so i stretched the limits of my mind and explored how i could trasfer it to paper…. the whole thing was a truely rewarding expirience.

Cesar Cortes’ Sketch: Stretch and Explore

For this sketch i used stretch and explore as my studio habit. I used it because i don’t like drawing unrealistic things that aren’t readable. I like to draw things that are very straight to the point and readable. With this sketch i went out of my comfort zone and drew this very abstract piece. With this piece you had to look at the piece a bit more than my others to fully comprehend it. I wanted something different than what i usually do, and ended up fully enjoying it but was difficult to finish and like it. The outcome came out good and how i thought it would be,and I might try similar tactics for future pieces.

The studio thinking habit i used in this one was Express by creating an idea i used, I used that feeling with this drawing and that it was a personal feeling.

Envision.

This sketch was for the first project at the beginning of the year, drawing hands. I had a general outline for what I wanted to do, but I wasn’t sure how to fit the text into the picture. I thought that if I drew out all the different ways to add in text, then I could decide which one worked best. Also, experimenting with the font helped me imagine more what I wanted my picture to look like :]

this is a very rough sketch of my “tag drawing”. i wanted to create a tag with a sort of graphic-design like appeal to it. i also felt that it would be better off if i didn’t just draw a random background, but actually and place the tag itself inside of the environment. the environment is a desert and it was chosen for no significant reason at all, its just random. however, the tatooine reference is there with the twin suns.

Michelle Baca Sketch: Envision/Express

soo, these are 2 different sketches for my imagined world. the bottom was my favorite but i ended up using the top as my final. to help envision a world, i went through magazines and found random pictures to put together. I kinda wanted a desperate, dark theme. doesnt really look like it without color though. When i made them i felt numb and lonely, unsure of what was next. so i did my best to convey that in the sketches.

Cristina Deras: Express

squid

in this picture, i tried to express negative emotions such as pain, struggle, and confusion. there is also some negative space that I used for emphasis on the background, creating a clash of colors. the squid’s eye is bloodshot and strained, and that is how it shows the pain, struggle, and focus of the problem.

Ricardo-Tag Sketch: Stretch And Explore

For this project i tried to do something that means a lot to me so I used the nickname my gf calls me which is “Snuggums” but I made it shorter and just used Snuggs for shorter. I used stretch and explore for this project because I never really tagged before and this was something big so I am putting alot of effort into this project.

I used one of the Eight Studio Habits, Express, by me relating my feelings and emotions that day in forms of lines and colors. also by the pattern of my sketch. by doing this i can fully let people know how my feelings can be drawn by pictures and color relating stuff. having the idea to do things makes it alot more easier to express yourself.

Envision

white-cat-5102

I used the studio habit of envisioning , what i could mentally picture what i wanted the tag to look like. I have the nickname of white cat from an inside joke with my friend. I think it came out pretty good for a rough sketch. Hopefully i can improve it even more to create a real piece of art.

Studio Habit-Stretch and Explore

art-21

Well, this is a three days journal. In this my mood is sometimes angry and happy. I worked on this a lot. I really stretched and explored a lot in it because i told about what i think inside my mind and i never did that before in any of my project. It was hella fun though. I also learned a lot in this project and hopefully i think that i get to know more things in my other projects.

Envision

invented_world_sketch1

With a fake world, you have to really think and imagine hard to see it. I used the envisioning technique so much throughout this invented world project because I wasn’t sure what kind of world I wanted and what would be in the project. Envisioning helped me think things through and see if certain objects would fit into the style type and had the right placement.

My Sketch: Engaging and Persisting

moth

This is my tag sketch. It says “moth” with a mouth eating a moth wing. Kind of random but I think it’s okay. I kind of thought of this name awhile ago, it just came to me.

With this type of project, I have no real experience. When I began I had no clue what I was going to do or what in the world it was going to look like. I didn’t really know where to start. After I had my tag name, I decided to just draw the first letter. I just jumped right into it. I focused on the task. I engaged myself in this certain art project. I didn’t just sit there and not doing anything even if it was like I had something like a writer’s block. Then, I persisted and kept at it. I finally got satisfaction in the completed task at hand.

did both these sketches out of the top of my head.  the one in colour’s going to be the final tag i guess.  you can’t see either of them too clearly ’cause they’re super small! it took me a while to envision everything that i wanted in the coloured sketch.  wanted to make sure that my thoughts were processed correctly.  roughly, it did.  One of the studio habits that i think i did was envision.  For some reason i chose to draw a rotting body, i envisioned it to be more orangey looking…sort of giraffe like, but it came out like this.  morbid looking in a way.  i’m not using this sketch anymore, but i did persist to make more  rough sketches and now i’m using a whole different tag.  drawing this sketch out definitely helped to get me the actual sketch that i’m doing recently.

On your expedition to being the best…DO NOT lose sight of your passion while competeing with your peers

yeah!

i developed craft because the art of copying someone elses graffiti is difficult. The hardest part is being proud of doing it, only the artificial can be satisfied with that. So instead i engaged and persisted because numerous times ive tried this style and i could never get the light and shadowing right, still havent but this is progress for me.

It seems nowadays that i can only see the light when i express my thoughts and designs on paper…

Sketch:Jaime: Reflect

Beaner Roots

While drawing this i was thinking back into my roots. Thinking back on how I always end up doing something bad always end up messing up but as I go on I learn from them. In my sketch I drew the kid with the mask of a skull, exposing the side of me that makes the bad choices, but i also drew the man under to show a more grown and acknowledged man to represent me learning from my mistakes. I put the tree in the back to show the roots of my life, to show how the more I live life the bigger and stronger i get. I also drew the tree blowing in the wind because life isn’t steady at the moment and I just have a lot of crap blown my way. -Jaime Vasquez

Express

Imaginary worldFor this project, I think I used the studio habit:express more than I used to. I never really painted or drew how I felt. This year is different. It’s not all just happy feeling paintings anymore. I guess I also used some engage and persist since the sketches took a really long time. Since this painting has mostly buildings and stuff, it required a lot of detail. So I had to put details into every single sketch or else it would of just looked like boxes. But now I know the importance of sketching. I felt like my final piece had some similarities but were different at the same time. I messed with the buildings on my final piece and put my little twist in them. I feel like I expressed myself in every detail that you see here. From the buildings to the girl to the colors. I feel like this was my best one yet.

Studio Habit Reflection: Envision

"Imagined World" Sketch

"Imagined World" Sketch

There are several habits necessary for an artist to develop in order to further develop his or her skill. Rough and intermediate sketches help the artist to think about these habits and to get ideas of improving the piece before moving to the final, finished piece. Looking back to when I was doing this sketch the most important habit that I thought about was ”Envision”.

In doing my intermediate sketch for the “Imagined World” project, I had already decided upon what the image was going to portray. I wanted a dreary feel to the whole aspect of the image, one that portrayed the unfairness how the impoverished are left in the wayside while the rich are seen in buildings that larger than life. The challenge then was to take the envisioned image in my mind and to portray it on paper. After trying several rough sketches, each with different ideas that portrayed the same thing, I tried to combine the best aspects of each sketch and put them all together in this intermediate sketch. The resulting image was this, although it is not exactly the image that was in my mind, it came incredibly close.

-JOSEPH OLIVERAS

Envision-Sketch Reflection

The sketchbook is one of an artist’s most valuable tools. It is where an one can pour out his thoughts without worries about “staying in the lines” or the judgements of his peers. But the greatest aspect of this tool is that it helps you plan the properties of your masterpiece. Therefore, I find that my sketches focus almost entirely on the studio habit, Envision. I don’t worry about stretching and exploring or reflecting; my sketches are only for solidifying the image I see in my head.

For this particular sketch for the tag project, I envisioned a piece that caused the eye to move smoothly across the piece. So I first roughly drew the path I intended to create and worked my tag based on those guidelines. Envisioning the piece and trying to transfer the image from my mind onto paper was the sole purpose of this sketch. I have found it extremely helpful to create sketches before the actual piece because it allows you to envision not only the technical aspects of an artwork, for example compostition and readability, but also the mood you want to portray to viewers.

FIRST REFLECTION!

PART ONE: Create a post that revisits the Understanding Goals for the Journal/Self-Portrait/Triptych Project.

RESPOND TO THE UNDERSTANDING GOALS QUESTIONS BELOW. AS YOU ANSWER THE QUESTIONS, GIVE CONCRETE EXAMPLES FROM YOUR PROJECT:

1. How can you create a Journal that illuminates your “inner” and “outer” worlds?
2. What is “Author’s Voice” And how does it relate to visual “Style” in works of Art?
3. How can you create a work of Art based on a journal entry?
4. How can you Communicate your AUTHOR’S VOICE in a VISUAL ARTWORK?
5. Why is it beneficial to communicate information in both written and visual forms?
